Yesterday, I found out that the yellow Miata I had found and was strongly considering had already been sold! Unfortunate but it was also in Texas, so finding a local one was a higher priority.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Up next is a ‘01 SE in British Racing Green that I have found for sale in Socal. I reached out to the owner and got a response. I just asked if he had any basic maintenance history. He had bought the car in 2012 with 84,643 miles on it and has done nothing but oil and tire changes. That means it is a bit overdue for some maintenance but thankfully my Miata had basically the same exact history so I already know what will need to be done. Some boomer had bought the car like 5 years prior, drove it around lightly, didnt do shit, left me with tons of small things to fix. But at least now I can come armed with a detailed list of things the car absolutely needs even before I look at it. Asking price of $5150 sounds like to me that he wants to get $5k after a mild back and forth haggle. However, I am more keen to wanting it for around the $4k-4.5k range due to the absolute need for a timing belt replacement. While its a non-interference motor and will at worst strand me, the water pump (changed at the same time) is of bigger importance. A failed water pump on this engine is a dead engine.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The timing belt job on a Miata is every 60k according to Mazda, even though California requires it to be 100k (with no different parts - figure that bullshit out!). Either way, at 133k its overdue on either schedule and would be a top priority for me. Some other things that would be high on my list would be a radiator, brakes, cam/crank sensors, plugs/wires, hoses, and belts just because I did all of those before 150k on mine. But the timing belt is the only DO NOW OR ELSE thing.

Currently my plan is to check out the car on Sunday if the guy is available. My main focus will be to make sure the body is in good shape and no rust anywhere. I should be able to figure out if anything is off mechanically just by test driving it. I’d hope to get in a good 15-20 minute drive if possible. I’m considering bringing my compression test kit too but at this mileage there would be way more red flags if I really needed to even check that. I am concerned he is going to pull the “i know what I got” typical boomer schtick but I am in no rush to get a car right now so I will just walk away if I cant get it much under $5k.

The fact that EVERYTHING THEY TYPED IS IN ALL CAPS combined with listing  the production number is worrying.

Yeah it made me think it was a dealer at first but based on his email and the content of the ad, I think it is just an old dude (boomer) who thinks that’s the cool way to use Craigslist. It makes me concerned particularly about him thinking any offer below asking price is “low balling” but its at least worth checking out since it won’t be much of a detour to do so.

It’s also why I have the maintenance concerns. But it would all be stuff I can handle no problem.

It’s  insane how much prices have spiked in the last few years. A few friends and I all bought beaters sub $1500 back in 2015, you can barely touch shells for that now. I’ve been looking for a nicer Miata and was pretty surprised to see the market at least doubled in price since the last time i looked.

Ehh anything under $5k is still pretty cheap for pretty much any car. My main goal is to get something with clean paint/body so its gonna cost me something in that range anyways. I would  be able to swap over my roll bar, sway bar, exhaust, seat/harness, and wheels and part out everything else. Maybe I could save money finding a base model with a 5sd and open diff since I could also swap over my LSD instead of parting that out. But with this one listed above $5k I probably dont have to worry about it selling any time soon so maybe a $4k offer might not be so unreasonable.

SENIOR DRIVER, WELL TAKEN CARE OF.

But we don't care about the driver being taken care of, how much care did the car receive?

No care at all from my email conversation. Thankfully these things are dependable and cheap/easy to fix. But that definitely is a detractor to the price for me. I bet this guy thinks its pristine shit, nothing wrong with it! Meanwhile I can think of a list worth $1k in self labor that is mandatory before I drive it much.

I also thought this image was funny. I always judge poeple who take photos with a tablet.

Not even in landscape orientation, what a philistine.

Also that soft top is dingy as all get out. I bet there's a mouse carcass or two in the rain rail.

Haha if you think that soft top is dingy, you should see mine. This is why I hate tan tops and interiors.

I put a new canvas top on mine this past spring, and it’s stayed satisfyingly clean so far . It’s so odd to have a clean top on a dirty beat- up car, though.

08 Miata

I worked on this today (cleaned the leather) and it’s a nice car. 2008, 41k, clear bra installed when new, appears garage kept with excellent paint , row your own. Price is on the higher side... but it’s probably worth it for someone looking for a really clean Miata.

It’s a Miata - not really rare or hard to find. Print out the maintenance schedule, list all the items that need to be replaced, include the cost, and go there with $4000 in cash. If they say no, walk away and keep looking.

You would probably have a sale if I were selling the car - I usually just want to get rid of shit that’s cluttering my house and garage.

Yeah my dirty top fits in with the rest of the paintless car. And being in Socal a top is unecssary anyways so it has been used maybe a handful of times since I moved out here. I put it up yesterday for the first time in many months.

Good point, it might help to document that stuff instead of just “pulling it out of my ass”. The timing belt and radiator are probably the only things that I can quantify but that is the bulk of it costwise anyways. Rad looks a little bit brown in the pics which is always a surefire sign it needs to go. I dont like showing up to craigslist ads with cash on hand just for safety but its not a terrible idea if I am serious.

Not a fan of the NC generation, especially the PRHT. I already have been toying with the idea of getting an NA just to have something lighter and simpler than my NB. No interest in making it heavier!

He says NADA is North of $7k so being listed at $3500, something must be wrong with it. I'm definitely tempted to at least send an email though. I've gotta figure out if an NB roll bar and seat mount is compatible in an NA, then I'd be more interested for sure.

if NA can fit in NB, should be vice versa?

Haha sweet, did my Google search for me. Thank you! This quote from the thread is solid:

In general, a 99+ bar will fit in a 90-97, but not the other way around. The rear glass will NOT work with the 90-97 bar. You won’t be able to put your top all the way down. If you have no soft top, ad in you deleted it, then yes. Otherwise, no.

So yeah I'd be good to go!
